Encyclopedia of Tobacconists - Those Storefronts and the Stories Behind Them

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
When one hears "tobacco shop," one might picture a counter with a showcase facing the street. The background to the spread of similar storefronts across Japan lies in the fact that under the monopoly system, detailed instructions were given to retail stores for sales, and retail associations in various regions began to jointly purchase sales tools such as showcases from around the early Showa period.

This exhibition recreates the storefronts of old tobacco shops and displays various items such as signs and advertisements from the Meiji to Showa periods, sales tools such as product cases, and business documents such as ledgers from our extensive collection. Also introduced is the history of tobacco sales that has been conducted on the other side of the counter.
