Elizabeth Peyton "Daystar Hakuro"

Ryosokuin Zen Temple
Finished
David Zwirner is presenting a new solo exhibition by Elizabeth Peyton (b. 1965) at the historic Ryosokuin in Kyoto's Gion district. Ryosokuin is a sub-temple of Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. This exhibition will feature a curated selection of Peyton's paintings, as well as works in ink, drawings, and prints. Enriched by site-specific works that complement the temple's environment, this exhibition marks Peyton's first solo show in Japan in approximately seven years, following "Elizabeth Peyton: Still Life" at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017.

Ryosokuin, the venue, was founded in 1358 by the Zen master Tokken Ryusan of the Rinzai sect's Oryu lineage. In Zen Buddhism (Rinzai sect), the tea ceremony and arts have long been subjects of Zen contemplation. In recent years, Ryosokuin has hosted numerous site-specific contemporary art exhibitions.
