Denzen Aodo et al.
Born in what is now Sukagawa, Fukushima, Denzen Aodo, real name Zenkichi Nagata (1748-1822), was one of the leading Western-style painters of the late Edo period. He was ordered to learn etching, which at the time had few successes in Japan. Through continuous trial and error, he mastered the art of etching and later created practical copperplate prints such as anatomical drawings of the human anatomy and maps of the world. His plate-making techniques were particularly outstanding, and he is highly regarded as a master of the technique in the history of early modern Japanese copperplate engraving.

This exhibition, held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death, looks back on the artist's work through his copperplate prints, Western-style paintings such as "Mount Asama" (Important Cultural Property, exhibited in the first half of the exhibition), and drawings. Western prints and works by his contemporaries are also exhibited to explore the source and uniqueness of his expression.
