Collection Exhibition I: Encounters with the Landscape

Kure Municipal Museum of Art
Starts 4/23
Landscape painting, which was established in 17th-century Netherlands, was introduced to Japan along with Western painting after the Meiji era.
Before that, Japan already had a deeply rooted tradition of landscape painting, influenced by Chinese art. However, it was rare for painters to depict real-world landscapes, as they often created idealized scenes instead.
Because of this, the introduction of modern landscape painting from the Western art world dramatically altered Japanese painters’ perception and artistic consciousness.

Since then, Japanese painters have continued to explore new ways of depicting landscapes, traveling across Japan and abroad in search of inspiration.

This exhibition focuses on modern and contemporary landscape paintings from our museum’s collection. It features natural scenery from the four seasons, urban landscapes from Japan and overseas, and imagined landscapes created by the artists themselves.
