Beyond the Realism - Masterpieces from the Hoki Museum

Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
The Hoki Museum, a rare institution specializing in realistic painting, opened in 2010 in Midori Ward, Chiba City. Its collection consists of approximately 500 realistic paintings by prominent contemporary Japanese artists. This exhibition showcases 64 carefully selected works from the Hoki Museum's collection.

The Hoki Museum's collection has toured various museums across Japan, driving the boom in realistic painting within the country. This is the first time the collection has been exhibited in Kumamoto. Alongside the museum’s popular masterpieces, the exhibition features the latest large-scale works that were part of the permanent exhibition "My Masterpiece" until 2023.

Through these masterpieces from the Hoki Museum, the exhibition presents the current state of realistic painting in Japan.
