Beloved Retro Toys

Yayoi Museum
Finished
People grow up with toys and live with fond memories of them. Always fun and fascinating, sometimes a companion, sometimes a friend and mentor, the small but large "toy" is one of the miracles of mankind that no other animal could ever have created.

The Japanese toy industry, which created the world's most prominent toy culture from the 16th to 19th centuries, underwent dizzying changes during the tumultuous 20th century that followed. Cute, delicate, and unique, toys were packed with the most advanced technology of their time and carried the dreams and aspirations of the people of each era, and they were truly a mirror of the times.

This exhibition introduces retro toys that were full of playfulness and dreams and traces the 100-year movement that still shines brilliantly in the history of toys, centering on the two major changes that came to the Japanese toy world in the 20th century (cultural changes in the spirit and values of the times, and changes brought about by the development of technology).
