Beads Around the World

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
Finished
Beads are widely used in clothing and accessories. Their materials vary by region and era, ranging from easily obtainable substances like wood and stone to precious minerals akin to gemstones, as well as synthetic materials like glass and plastic. Adorning oneself with beads goes beyond mere decoration; it can express identity related to ethnicity or social status, symbolize wealth and power, and serve as a connection to the spiritual world, such as prayer beads strung together with heartfelt prayers.

This exhibition introduces beads from approximately 40 countries, including highly prized glass beads known as "tonbo-dama" (dragonfly beads) traded as valuable goods, elaborate bead-embroidered dresses from Europe, and symbolic clothing and accessories from various Asian and African ethnic groups.
