Arts & Crafts and Design: From William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Arts and Crafts is a design movement advocated by William Morris (1834-96), a 19th-century British designer, poet, and social activist. Criticizing the mass production of inferior products created by mechanization and commercialism that neglected the handiwork of craftspeople that resulted from the Industrial Revolution, Morris reexamined the value of quality craftsmanship and natural materials. He produced a variety of arts and crafts rooted in everyday life.

The Arts and Crafts spirit advocated by Morris resonated with the young designers and architects of his time. It spread to other European countries besides England, as well as to the United States and even to Japan. The Arts and Crafts practice of linking everyday life with the arts has been carried over into contemporary design thought.

This exhibition introduces the fascination and expansion of the Arts and Crafts movement, which became the source of modern design, through 160 works of furniture, metalware, glassware, jewelry, and books, including "The Strawberry Thief," one of Morris' best-known works.
