The main building of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum was completed in 1933 as the residence of the Asakamiya family. The building is highly regarded both in Japan and abroad as a fine example of the Art Deco architecture that flourished in Japan during the 1920s and 1930s when it was popular in Europe, the U.S., and the rest of the world.
Since its opening as an art museum in 1983, the museum has held exhibitions that make the most of the Asakamiya Residence. The annual open house exhibition focuses on the architecture itself, particularly in terms of design, techniques, and materials, and introduces the charms of the former Asakamiya Residence from various angles, with a different theme each year. The year 2023 will mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the museum.
This year's exhibition focuses on the Asakamiya family. In addition to a reproduction of the interior of the house with furnishings from the palace period, the exhibition also introduces aspects of life at that time through photographs, video materials, crafts, furnishings, and clothes left by people who once passed through the space.
