いわさきちひろが東京・下石神井でくらし、絵を描いていた50年以上前、日本は高度成長期のまっただなかでした。開発の名のもと、木々は切られ、川は埋められ、それまで見られた草花や生きものも減っていきました。ちひろは、「私は私の絵本のなかで、いまの日本から失われたいろいろなやさしさや、美しさを描こうと思っています。」と語っていますが、そこには、身近な自然が失われていくことへの危惧も含まれていたのかもしれません。
それから50年がたち、多くの生きものが日々地球から消えつつあります。ちひろの絵をとおして、人間以外のいろいろな「いのち」となかよく生きるにはどうしたらよいか、楽しく考えていく展覧会です。
