The Kuma Museum of Art held the exhibition "The Dream of Manifesting Gods: Visionary Artists from Kaita Murayama and Shoji Sekine to the Present Day" from October 21 to December 24, 2023. In this exhibition, artists who create with a burning passion to capture something beyond themselves are named "The Dream of Manifesting Gods," and a diverse range of artworks are introduced under the theme of "expressing something beyond human perception."

This collection exhibition will introduce selected works from our collection based on the theme of "The Dream of Manifesting Gods."

Those who have felt something through visions or hallucinations reflect what they receive in their works. Artists like Kaita Murayama (1896-1919), who sought something and produced art motivated by visions, Michisei Kohno (1895-1950), who found something in the nature of Nagano, Tetsugoro Yorozu (1885-1927), who depicted inner emotions, and Shunsuke Miwada (1913-2015), who portrayed familiar landscapes as if from another world, will have their works exhibited.

Furthermore, we consider the attitude of being driven by something and the act of creation transcending ordinary human endeavors as one aspect of "The Dream of Manifesting Gods." Beizan Miwada (1821-1908) is said to have painted while intoxicated, having lost self-awareness. This can be attributed to the anticipation of expressing something that cannot be predicted even by oneself. Susumu Kinoshita (1947-) thoroughly confronts his subjects to capture the essence of human existence, aiming to depict the surface supported by the inner world of the model. Keizo Tawa (1952-) hammers iron tirelessly to create his works. Through this endless repetition, iron transforms from an inanimate lump into another existence with a new expression.
