・Part I: Bridge to the Desired Scenery in Nanga Painting - Centering around Roshi Oyama
What comes to mind when you hear "Nanga painting"? Some may imagine the idealized landscapes of China's deep mountains and valleys, inhabited by sages, while others might perceive it as old-fashioned and difficult to approach. Nanga painting became popular from the late Edo period to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, but in the Meiji era, it was ridiculed as "tsukune imo san sui" and its popularity gradually declined.

In response, Nanga painters endeavored to preserve the art form. One such artist was Soun Tagaki (1815-1898) of the Ashikaga school, who incorporated elements of the Rinpa and Nanshin schools. His grand disciple, Roshi Oyama (1902-1995), attempted to overcome the crisis of Nanga painting by adding elements of abstract art.

This exhibition introduces Nanga painting focusing on Oyama from the museum's collection. This exhibition reflects on the landscapes they admired and the trial and error they went through to sustain Nanga painting. Additionally, contemporary artworks by artists who have inherited the spirit of Nanga painting will be displayed.

・Part II: Towards the Avant-garde - The Asakawa Collection and Contemporary Art
The "Asakawa Collection" consists of several hundred artworks donated to the Ashikaga Municipal Art Museum by Kunio Asakawa (1932-), who was involved in organizing exhibitions and buying and selling artworks of modern and contemporary art as an art dealer from the 1950s for over half a century. Initially aspiring to be a painter, Asakawa assisted in establishing Nanga Gallery, one of the pioneering contemporary art galleries in Japan. During his 12-year tenure there, he organized numerous exhibitions for leading Japanese artists. Subsequently, he managed his gallery, Shunju, for 35 years. The "Asakawa Collection" was created through his career as an art dealer. This exhibition introduces previously unreleased works from the collection and contemporary art pieces held by the Ashikaga Municipal Art Museum.
