Unzen— The Heisei Eruption: Through Sunamori Katsumi and Mitsuyuki Toyohito

Tama Art University Hachioji Campus
Finished

Artists

Katsumi Sunamori, Toyohito Mitsuyuki
Natural disasters and artistic expressions were thought to not be connected. Yet it is clear that human lives have been endangered in the confrontation with nature in the far past. It is certain that many lives have been lost and people began holding memorial services for the victims, or feeling the need to "express" as a sign of slight hope for those who survived. Therefore, natural disasters and artistic expressions are strongly connected at the very core.
In this exhibition we will focus on "The Heisei Shimabara Eruption" in contrast to what is known as "The Kansei Shimabara Eruption", and will present the photographs and paintings of two artists - Katsumi Sunamori and Toyohito Mitsuyuki. Along with facts about history, geography and earth science, we will incorporate aspects of memory inheritance and disaster prevention under the generic name "Unzen", and will trace the new possibilities of the topic "Disaster and Expression" at the art exhibition of an art university from the standpoint of Art Anthropology.
Venue: Art-Theque Gallery 2F
