Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo Reopening Commemorative Exhibition II - Monet and Others from the Sumitomo Western Paintings Collection

Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum Tokyo
Finished
This is the second exhibition of masterpieces from the museum collection to commemorate the reopening of the Sen-Oku Hakkokan Museum Tokyo. The Sumitomo Western-style painting collection began with Monet's, "Parc Monceau," which was exhibited in Japan at the end of the 19th century, but the collection also includes historical paintings by Jean-Paul Laurens and others who represented French academicism of the same period as the Impressionists. The Impressionists pursued light, while the Realists pursued a sense of reality through shadows. The exhibition introduces a number of modern Western-style paintings, including some masterpieces never before exhibited in the museum, that were nourished and developed from these two streams of "light and shadow".
