"Future Boy Conan” Exhibition - Fascinating Manga Films!

Ghibli Museum, Mitaka

Hayao Miyazaki
One of the characteristics of the works of film director Hayao Miyazaki is that "when you finish watching them, you find yourself a little more energized than before."

The viewer is drawn into the scenes of the main character and the world in which he or she is active, and the film evokes the wishes and longings that are hidden within us. The story is relaxing and enjoyable because it is an unrealistic fictional world, and the exhilaration brought about by the boldness of the story is refreshing.

Manga films, in which the viewer becomes the hero of the story and feels like he or she is moving around in the ridiculous world created by the imagination, are the origin and basis of Hayao Miyazaki's works.

This aspect is most strongly expressed in Hayao Miyazaki's first work, the animated television series "Future Boy Conan" (1978).
In this exhibition, the "appeal of manga films" depicted in the 26 episodes will be unraveled in two exhibition rooms, using the stories, machines, setting materials, and image boards drawn during the creative process.

The 13-hour-long film is a "fun and entertaining animated film" that is made to look like a single movie. We would be delighted if you could experience in the exhibition room the moment when the source of energy turns into a step toward tomorrow.

*The exhibition date is tentative and will be updated as soon as it is confirmed.
