Ainu Culture from a Regional Perspective - The Clothing Culture of Shiraoi

National Ainu Museum
FinishedReservation Required
The Ainu word "ruhunpe" is used to describe the complex patterns created by interweaving straight lines and double-sided lines. This thematic exhibition will focus on the cotton garment, ruhunpe, and introduce the transition from "clothes passed down in the family" to "clothes passed down in the community" in the Shiraoi region. This exhibition will be the first time that all of the White Mountain clothing will be displayed together in one place. By showing the trends of the time period that influenced the culture of Shiraoi clothing, the display will help visitors understand the process of forming the regional characteristics of clothing.

This thematic exhibition is the first in a series of exhibitions "Ainu Culture from a Regional Perspective" which will introduce the uniqueness and diversity of Ainu culture from a regional perspective.
