This exhibition presents two books by Henri Matisse (1869-1954): Jazz (1947) with stenciled illustrations; and his book of lithograph prints, Poèmes de Charles d’Orléans (1950). These illustrated books, wonderfully showcasing Matisse’s lucid line drawings and vivid approach to colouration, were acquired by nihonga artist Hōshun Yamaguchi(1893-1971). This exhibition showcases these books, introduced into the museum collection as part of the Hōshun Yamaguchi library, alongside copies of the French art review, Verve.
