Exhibition by two artists, Mai Miyake and Kasetsu. Mai Miyake is creating site-specific art that incorporates traditional Japanese aesthetics and craft techniques into contemporary art. Drawing on the Japanese art of calligraphy, she picks up the voices and culture of the place where the work is placed and incorporates them into the concept and exhibition. In this exhibition, she challenges herself to create a large-scale installation using boats and water, fitting the location of the Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery in a port town.
In her calligraphic work, Kasetsu explores the relationship between nature and human beings and creates installations combining calligraphy and text. For this exhibition, using the Kanji character for “tree”, she will explore the fear of nature that lies at the core of human beings.
