Japan’s only outsider art curator, Nobumasa Kushino will hold his first large-scale exhibition entitled Nobumasa Kushino Outside Japan Exhibition. This is in celebration of the publication of his newest book, “Outside Japan: Japanese Outsider Art”.
Outsider art is generally known as a form of art produced by those who did not receive any formal education in art. Outsider art gained attention at the Art Brut Japonais Exhibition held in 2010 in Paris, attracting a total of 120,000 visitors. The Japanese government also supports the efforts to promote the movement toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, encouraging artistic activities by persons with impairments.
Mr.Kushino has carefully selected artworks from truly hidden expressionists who are full of passion to convey their messages. Many of the excellent and distinct creations are compositions by featured artists in his book, “Outside Japan: Japanese Outsider Art”. Pieces include those created by people in the Japanese yanki subculture (often defined as high-school students who are seen as delinquents or criminals) as well as silver artists (elderly people) that provide a surprising and impressive array of art to admire.
