Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a leading figure in Viennese art at the turn of the 20th century. Klimt’s paintings, known for their opulent decorative character and fin-de-siècle eroticism, still enjoy widespread popularity today. This exhibition marking the centennial of the artist’s death will feature more than 25 oil paintings by Klimt- the largest display ever to be realized in Japan. They will range from early naturalistic works to his “Golden Phase” works created after forming the Viennese Secession to the sensual portraits of women and the landscapes he painted throughout his career. Through these and works by Klimt’s contemporaries in Vienna, Japanese artwork inspirational to his style, and a re-creation of exhibits at Viennese Secession Building- using elaborate reproduction of the wall paintings- viewers will have the opportunity to experience the splendor of fin-de-siècle Viennese art.
