Artist’s statement:

I consider urban landscapes to be a form of art portraying social conditions. In 19th century Europe, Impressionists painted the modernization of Paris, while in Meiji Japan Yuichi Takahashi depicted the transformation of Tohoku cities, and in the 1940s Shunsuke Matsumoto captured wartime Tokyo. While documenting their respective eras, each of these artists also expressed their own emotions and realities. Like many artists today, my paintings feature streets lined shuttered shops, rundown buildings, and other lonely scenes found in regional cities. In these places I can see the remnants of people’s lives and activities, and from this I can sense the things of importance that people living today have lost. Like so many other urban portraits, my paintings show both the realities of the society in which I live and my own soul residing within that society.
