"Indelible Images: 3/11 Captured on Film"

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan
Finished
Marking the first anniversary of the 3/11 catastrophe, FCCJ pays tribute to a group of documentarians and filmmakers who have helped us make sense of the tragedy—and raised awareness of ongoing concerns—through their work. Whether encouraging us to mourn and heal, highlighting recovery efforts, rallying support or promoting community activism, their exceptional films have allowed us to comprehend the aftermath of March 11, 2011 in ways that would not otherwise be possible.

We are honored to be hosting the first screenings in Japan of Lucy Walker’s stunning Oscar-nominated film “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom” and of the eye-opening documentary “Radioactivists: Protest and Discourse in Japan Since Fukushima” by German directors Julia Leser and Clarissa Seidel. We are also featuring sneak previews and director Q&A sessions with horror-meister Hideo Nakata (“Ring,” “Dark Water”) and hitmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi (“20th Century Boys,” “Hayabusa”), both of whom have made idiosyncratic documentaries about 3/11. We will have a special screening of the hope-affirming documentary “Pray for Japan” from Tokyo Pop founder Stu Levy, and Atsushi Furukatsu will present his new gently comedic fiction film “A Gentle Rain Falls for Fukushima.” Globally renowned antinuclear activist Hitomi Kamanaka will share clips from her award-winning films. Director Masaki Kobayashi will be on hand to screen his rousing “Fukushima Hula Girls,” and other highlights include a film with Ken Watanabe as host, and finally, FCCJ’s own Bruce Osborn journeying through Tohoku to capture “oyako” portraits of 3/11 survivors.

By providing a venue for Japanese and foreign audiences to experience these indelible moving images together and to address crucial issues for the future, FCCJ continues to take the lead in the challenge to inform, enlighten and deepen the public discussion of 3/11. We have also invited volunteer organizations, Tohoku artists, craftspeople, sake brewers and other vendors to participate in the weekend. Please plan to join us and show your support for these creators and creative efforts.

Members: Please make your seating reservations at the FCCJ Reception Desk (3211-3161) or http://www.fccj.or.jp/node/7232 and pick up your tickets at least 15 minutes prior to your screening(s).

Public: We encourage the public to participate, but public reservations cannot be made. Seats are first come, first serve, with priority given to FCCJ members/guests. Please plan to arrive early and obtain a free, numbered ticket in order to guarantee a seat.

All movie screenings are free, noncommercial events.
