Junzo Sakakura Exhibition

Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Junzo Sakakura
Architect Junzo Sakakura (1901-1969) is renowned for his ability to combine traditional beauty with functionality. He strove to create "a dwelling space that retains all the essential elements of architecture" - a philosophy that can be seen in his housing designs, which demonstrate a coherent arrangement of spaces, a keen sense for proportion and sculptural detail, as well as a deep understanding of technical issues. The influence of Charlotte Perriand, who worked with Le Corbusier to put the theory of modernism into practice, is palpable.

Sakakura continued to provide answers to the dramatic changes, events and social issues of the Showa period by collaborating with creators from different fields, trying not to confine himself to architecture. This exhibition will provide a comprehensive view of his work through life-sized reproductions of the main door of one of his housing projects, in addition to drawings, photographs, models and videos of chairs designed by Sakakura.
