Shunso Hishida
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Shunso Hishida (1874-1911) and the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in Fukui and Tsuruga, we will be holding an exhibition that takes a look behind the scenes at the creation of Falling Leaves, the first work acquired by our museum. Falling Leaves continues to pose new questions even 115 years after it was created. This time, we will be exhibiting five works from the series, including Falling Leaves (owned by Eisei Bunko), an Important Cultural Property, for the first time in Fukui .

By analyzing sketchbooks, preliminary drawings, and related works left behind during the work's creation, the exhibition will explore the background to the birth of the timeless masterpiece "Falling Leaves" and the art of Shunsō, who discovered a new realm of painting through natural observation. It will also introduce tree-drawings by contemporary Japanese and Western painters, as well as early modern painting such as Ogata Korin's "Maki-Maple Screen" (Important Cultural Property, Tokyo University of the Arts) , tracing the lineage of tree paintings from the early modern to modern eras. Please enjoy the profound world surrounding "Falling Leaves."
