100 Years of Japanese Tiles

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Finished
This traveling exhibition, jointly organized by INAX Live Museum, Tajimi City Mosaic Tile Museum, and the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, explores the origins and history of tiles in Japan and attempts to find the first step toward the future.

Tiles, which are believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, spread throughout the world due to their durability and ease of cleaning and were introduced to Japan via various regions. Since being called “tiles” in 1922, Japanese tile culture has flourished in response to changes in lifestyles and urbanization, while passing through earthquakes, wars, and other major events.

This exhibition traces the evolution of the tile culture that had been fostered before the unification of the name and introduces the 100-year history of Japanese tiles, which have been used in a wide variety of settings, including kitchens, toilets, washrooms, buildings, universities, subway stations, and public bathhouses, along with their historical background.
