Kaz Oshiro

CLEAR GALLERY is proud to announce the solo exhibition of Kaz Oshiro. His newest works will be shown here in Tokyo, Japan.

Born in Okinawa Japan, Kaz Oshiro now lives and works in Los Angeles. He is well known internationally for his distinct vision and artistic expression.

In spite of their “typical capitalism icon” look, and object-like appearance, his works are paintings done on a three dimensional canvas.

Oshiro’s works are full of paradoxes. Although his motifs (ex. washing machines / garbage cans / amplifiers etc.) are objects which portray a scene full of sound, complete silence lies under the surfaces of his art works. The amplifiers that usually play music, are not only silent, but also have a substantial difference in its weight. In addition, the stains and fades, along with markings done by spray paint portrayed through his works, indicate the progression of time with its supposed owner, though it is soon to be found that everything seen is an imitation, and a fact which has been fabricated.

The classical goal of artistic expression was to imitate nature. Oshiro has shifted this goal to the imitation of the material world, presenting works created through his multilateral vision of life today. His works portray the co-existing ‘reality’ and ‘non-reality’, along with various paradoxes we face in our everyday life, even questioning our reason of existence.
