SCAI The Bathhouse

SCAI THE BATHHOUSE is a contemporary art gallery that introduces the latest Japanese artists to the world, and at the same time, actively introduces outstanding artists from overseas who have not yet been introduced in Japan. The gallery space was renovated from a 200-year-old public bathhouse, “Kashiwayu”, and opened in 1993. This gallery space has taken over the communal function of a public bath with the common language of contemporary art. The exterior of the building has a tiled roof with a towering chimney, but once visitors step inside, they will find a neutral space with a concrete floor and white walls, making it an extremely unique exhibition space. The high ceilings allow natural light to enter, creating a sense of openness.
Recent major exhibitions include those of domestic artists such as Tatsuo Miyajima and Masato Nakamura, as well as those of renowned international artists such as Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie, and Yee Bul. Although we focus on contemporary art exhibitions, we have also held music concerts and performances.
