Yuya Suzuki "Archaic Future"

Moerenuma Park

Artists

Yuya Suzuki
This solo exhibition of Sapporo/Berlin-based artist Yuya Suzuki is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Glass Pyramid.

Suzuki creates what he has coined "archegraphs" in search of universal shapes and images that transcend cultures and the symbolic systems of potential worlds. The "forms" that continue to be unconsciously recognized in the urban landscape, such as trash randomly placed on the street, walls with torn posters and graffiti, and details of buildings- these are the non-functional elements that exist in these public spaces. These non-functional elements in public space are abstracted through a vast amount of drawings and transformed into three-dimensional works with soft colors and shapes, videos, light boxes, etc. before being presented as new compositions.

In this exhibition, Suzuki presents new works inspired by the legacy of sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who designed Moerenuma Park. Noguchi traveled to various places around the world, discovering values that extend beyond traditional objects such as ancient ruins and sculptures into the future, and reflecting them in his work. The universality of "form" found in Noguchi's work is the inspiration for Suzuki's work, and by shifting his perspective from the future to the past and from the past to the future, the works created through his exploration of the interstices of time resemble both ancient artifacts and devices for the new future.
