Yukio Fukazawa
Yukio Fukazawa (1924-2017) was born in Masuho Town (now Hirabayashi, Fujikawa Town), Minami-Koma County, Yamanashi Prefecture. He studied metal engraving at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts).

After World War II, Fukazawa moved to Tsurumai, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, where he focused on oil painting. However, he fell ill due to a bruise on his right knee sustained during the war, leading to six years of living with his right knee strapped in a brace.

During his illness, Fukazawa began working on copperplate engraving, learning various techniques through self-study. In 1963, he traveled to Mexico City to teach copperplate engraving techniques at the request of the Mexican International Cultural Promotion Association. Thereafter, he created numerous large-scale prints featuring powerful color fields influenced by Mexican civilization.

In 1981, Fukazawa developed a self-named automatic burnisher called "Chintara I," and produced fantastical works using the mezzotint technique. Fukazawa likened the creation of copperplate prints to literature in his book "Techniques of Copperplate Engraving" (1966, published by David Company), stating, “Of course, having a rich and versatile vocabulary is important, but it alone does not produce good literature; and on the other hand, it is troublesome because it cannot be achieved without it.”

True to his words, Fukazawa constantly pursued new themes and techniques, widely sharing his knowledge and working tirelessly for many years to expand the scope of Japanese copperplate engraving. As a prolific artist who created over 1,100 works throughout his life, it is impossible to cover all his pieces in one exhibition. This exhibition selects approximately 200 works that trace the evolution of Fukazawa's style, offering a journey through his extensive artistic career.
