Yuki Harada Exhibition

Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii
Finished

Artists

Yuki Harada
Yuki Harada has been staying in Hawaii intermittently since 2019, researching the history of "Hawaiian immigrants" who crossed the ocean from his hometowns of Yamaguchi and Hiroshima. In "Shadowing," a video work presented in this exhibition, the artist, dressed as a CG "digital human" modeled after a Japanese American in Hawaii, tells various episodes based on Japanese American folklore.

The people who came to Hawaii from Suo-Oshima and other places in Japan overcame many difficulties to build a local society and formed a transnational culture represented by the pidgin English language. Harada, who sees the powerful nature of humanity in the paths of these people, invites a new context for his own work.
