Yoshitoshi Tsukioka
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-92) was an ukiyo-e artist active during the period of rapid change from the Edo period to the Meiji period.

Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Yoshitoshi was introduced at the age of 12 to Kuniyoshi Utagawa, a master of samurai paintings, where he honed his skills. During the turbulent period of the late Edo and Meiji eras, when social systems and values changed dramatically, Yoshitoshi's specialty of warrior paintings was transformed into realistic battle scenes, and his series of "blood-soaked paintings" and "cruelty-free paintings" became synonymous with his work. His subsequent successes in historical and genre paintings catapulted him up the ladder to the ranks of popular ukiyo-e artists. His bold compositions, vivid colors, and acrobatic poses of his figures fascinate us even today.

This exhibition introduces more than 200 works from the collection of Masaki Nishii, one of the world's foremost collectors of Hoshi's work, including drawings, woodblocks, and hand paintings. The exhibition will showcase the masterful technique, rich imagination, and superb sense of composition of the last ukiyoe master, Yoshitoshi.
