Yofuku-ji Temple, a vanished large-scale temple Minamoto no Yoritomo Loved and Kamakura Gokenin, Vassals of the Kamakura Shogunate

Kanagawa Prefectural Museum Of Cultural History
Finished
The site of Eifukuji Temple (Yofukuji), a designated national historic site, is located in Nikaido, Kamakura. When Minamoto no Yoritomo destroyed the Hiraizumi Fujiwara clan in the Battle of Oshu, he witnessed the gorgeous Pure Land world of the northern capital, including Chuson-ji, Motsu-ji, and Muryokoin, and brought this culture back to Kamakura. As a result, in 1189, he planned to build Eifuku-ji Temple, a large temple equipped with Rinchi-ga-an, in Nikaido, Kamakura, thus embodying the Pure Land world in the urban area of Kamakura. Eifukuji Temple, along with Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Temple and Katsuchojuin Temple, not only supported the Kamakura shogunate as a religious authority, but its grandeur also demonstrated to the warriors of the eastern provinces the legitimacy of the shogunate's rule from a cultural aspect. However, after the fall of the Kamakura shogunate, Eifukuji Temple was destroyed by fire in the Muromachi period (1333-1573) and was abandoned without being rebuilt, leaving its history behind in the ground.

However, the Eifukuji ruins are filled with archaeological materials that not only document the temple's history but also show the splendor of the temple's past, reminding us of the importance of Eifukuji to the Kamakura Shogunate and the Kamakura court nobles. This exhibition focuses on Eifukuji Temple, which was deeply involved in establishing and developing the Kamakura Shogunate. It reconstructs the entire picture and trajectory of the temple from a diverse collection of historical materials, including documents, archaeological materials, and art materials.
