Artists

Yasuhiro Ishimoto
Photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto's exhibition will feature seven black-and-white and five color photographs of the Katsura Imperial Villa, showcasing a modernist perspective on traditional Japanese architecture. Influenced by studies at the Institute of Design in the tradition of the Bauhaus, Ishimoto first photographed the villa in 1953 for a MoMA exhibition in New York. These works, published in 1960 and revised in later editions, greatly impacted architectural history. After the villa's restoration, Ishimoto returned in the early 1980s to capture it in color, culminating in the 1983 book "Katsura Imperial Villa: Space and Form." This exhibition highlights an ability to blend harmony and modernism in photography.
