Yasue Kodama
Yasue Kodama was born in Kobe in 1961. She graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts with a degree in painting. She began painting a series of still life paintings titled "natura morta" (meaning still life in Italian) in the early 1980s. As she deepened her thinking about painting, her works became more abstract.

Over the next ten years, Kodama's work continued to push the abstract language of painting, and when she reached a certain point, she suddenly turned to a figurative style, incorporating objects found in nature and around us - flowers, trees, goldfish, etc. - into her paintings. In 2009, Kodama began working on a series of works entitled "Deep Rhyme," where she uses a unique technique of applying multiple layers of paint to the canvas to "abstract as a painting the shadows and depths disclosed by an unknowable existence.

In this way, Kodama's paintings seem to move back and forth between figuration and abstraction regularly. However, her thinking and practice are far more complex. Starting from capturing things in detail and reproducing them in her paintings, Kodama explores the meaning of the appearance of things in his paintings, the relationship between herself and the subject at the time, the depth of space between the two, and the incorporation of coincidence in time. While refining her painting techniques to deepen these considerations, she has continued her attempts to overcome the existing language of modernist painting critically.

Kodama has been exploring a world that can only be expressed through her paintings. Her early work from the 1980s to the 1990s represents her first leap forward. This exhibition will exhibit and discuss her steps in two phases.
