The Taisho period was when new art flourished rapidly, influenced by a trend toward democracy that emphasized freedom, individual respect, and the flow of information from abroad. This cultural shift also nurtured various seeds of creativity in Yamanashi.

During the Taisho period in Yamanashi, the first Western painting group in the prefecture was formed, and Giro Tsuchiya, who studied under Ryusei Kishida, established the Akatade-kai, which led to the formation of the Kofu Art Association and the Yamanashi Art Association. Additionally, female Western painters emerged, such as Kuwayo Hanihara, who became the first female associate member of the Nika Association and worked alongside artists like Tetsugoro Yorozu, and Midori Ishihara, who traveled to France and America. Toshihito Yonekura, who spent his youth during the Taisho period, was influenced by Harue Koga and Ichiro Fukuzawa and became deeply involved in surrealism. Furthermore, artists like Kazuo Tezuka and Yoshitsugu Tsuchibashi, who passed away before the war, left a strong impression despite their short careers.

In Japanese painting, artists like Koichiro Kondo in ink painting and Shodo Anayama in the new Yamato-e style were active. Meanwhile, Yako Okochi, Shunko Mochizuki, and Seiju Furuya, who were from Yamanashi, garnered attention with their consecutive awards at the Imperial Art Exhibition in the early Showa period. Additionally, Koyo Okada captured photographs of Mount Fuji, and the Asakawa brothers, Noritaka and Takumi, re-evaluated Korean ceramics. The period also saw the development of various other artistic activities, such as sketches by painters depicting local scenery during the war, which remain valuable records.

This exhibition, titled "Yamanashi Modern," will introduce the activities of artists connected to Yamanashi and the artistic atmosphere of the region from the Taisho period to the end of World War II (1912–1945), showcasing related works and materials.
