”Yama no Daigomi”Exhibition

Atelier Muji Ginza
Until Apr 13
Fully used, nothing wasted—this principle lies at the heart of MUJI’s approach to product creation.

Today, only a small portion of trees in our forests is used for furniture or building materials. Branches, leaves, short logs, bark, and offcuts generated during milling are often considered unsuitable for use, leaving most to be burned or left to decompose. As a result, many of these trees—carefully cultivated by hand for nearly 50 years—vanish without ever being seen.

In 1980, MUJI introduced a canned salmon product that utilized the entire fish, challenging the conventional practice of using only visually appealing parts. The slogan “A salmon is a salmon from head to tail” reflects MUJI’s goal of fully utilizing resources. This philosophy remains a cornerstone of MUJI’s product creation to this day.

This exhibition shines a light on discovering value in what might initially seem like waste. In collaboration with individuals from the forestry industry in Miyazaki Prefecture, it highlights materials traditionally seen as difficult to use. Guided by the perspective that “A tree is a tree from top to bottom,” it explores the creative potential of craftsmanship.

By understanding the importance of wood in our daily lives and its impact on the mountains, and by exploring ways to live in harmony with the woods, we hope to uncover opportunities that will lead to a sustainable future.
