World of Regional Maps: Mikawa in the Edo Period

Anjo City Museum of History
Until Nov 10
In 1604, Tokugawa Ieyasu required all daimyos to submit "country maps" and "village registers" to help manage and understand the territory. This mapping process occurred in four major phases: Shoho, Genroku, and Tempo. From the mid-Edo period, privately produced woodblock maps became popular, sparking public interest. These maps, akin to modern prefectural maps, reflect the historical context in which they were created. This exhibition highlights the newly acquired map of Mikawa and explores the intriguing details of various maps.
