We Love Onsen

Morioka History and Culture Museum
Finished
Located along the Ring of Fire, Japan is known as one of the world's leading hot spring countries. While Japan is often affected by volcanic activity, earthquakes, and other disasters, few dislike the blessing of hot springs. Since ancient times, Japanese people have been familiar with hot springs, but it was during the Edo period when even commoners began to travel extensively, particularly enjoying trips for medicinal bathing.

During these therapeutic journeys, people not only sought healing from illnesses in the hot springs but also visited nearby temples and shrines on the way to and from the springs, and stopped at famous scenic spots. By visiting temples, shrines, and other places filled with the natural energy that complements the healing properties of hot springs, they sought to broaden their knowledge and gain vitality for the future.

In this exhibition, we will explore how people from the Morioka domain during the Edo period enjoyed hot springs by tracing their footsteps through travelogues and records written during their therapeutic journeys. This exhibition hopes to provide an opportunity for visitors to be both physically and mentally rejuvenated and encourage them to visit the local hot springs, which have been cherished since ancient times.
