Machiko Hasegawa
"Wakame" is one of the characters in Machiko Hasegawa's representative work, "Sazae-san." In the anime, she has an image of a diligent and studious student, but the "Wakame" drawn by Hasegawa is an energetic girl with charming childlike expressions and gestures. Sometimes capricious and stubborn, she throws herself on her back, flapping her arms and legs, crying, and making a fuss to get her demands met. She also occasionally plays pranks to trouble her family. On the other hand, she speaks maturely, actively helps out, and is a kind and good girl who loves her family.

"Sazae-san" began serialization on April 22, 1946, in the "Yukan Fukunichi" and continued until 1974, with occasional breaks due to changes in the publication and other commitments. During this time, while juggling various other jobs, Hasegawa serialized short manga featuring "Wakame" as the main character in children's magazines. This became "Wakame-chan." Amid her busy schedule, Hasegawa also worked on a picture book series featuring "Wakame," which was released by the publishing company founded by her family.

This exhibition will display original artworks, including color works, selected based on "conveying the charm of Wakame-chan." Also on display will be serialized magazines, picture books, related materials, and merchandise. The exhibition will also address some reader perspectives and curiosities with "The Mystery of Wakame-chan," introducing them along with her charm.
