Venetian Glass and the City of Festivals

Hakone Venetian Glass Museum
Finished
In the 16th century, the Venetian Republic saw an influx of intellectuals, artists, and various goods such as silk, ceramics, and spices through maritime trade. Already experiencing rapid growth politically and economically in the 13th to 14th centuries, the republic reigned as the dominant power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

While the seas brought immense wealth to Venice, they also ushered in various calamities such as disputes over maritime dominance and repeated outbreaks of the plague (Black Death). Rising from these challenges, Venice chose festivities as a means to showcase its prosperity to the world and to reaffirm the unity of its citizens. For Venice, festivals served not only as religious ceremonies but also as political instruments to unite the nation.

Distinctive Venetian festivals such as the "Marriage to the Sea" to assert maritime dominance, the "Redentore Festival" and the "Salute Church Festival" to give thanks for the end of the plague, and the "Carnival" which propelled Venice into fame as a city of revelry, have continued to captivate people to this day, evolving while maintaining their essence.

This exhibition presents the splendid Venetian glass fitting for the city's festivals, alongside the enduring allure of festivities that continue to attract people across time. Additionally, the exhibition will feature photographs of the Venetian Carnival by Takashi Tsuboya.
