A natural paint made from sap, since ancient times lacquer has been deeply rooted in daily life in Japan, from everyday life to the realm of art. This exhibition will showcase the works of young craftsmen and artists who use lacquer to create new products and their fascination with the lacquer they create by demonstrating their individual sensibilities.

Some aspects of lacquer have yet to be elucidated even by current science. The exhibition also introduces the results of research on lacquer conducted at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Technology Research Institute and the efforts of young craftspeople and artists to create new forms of contemporary lacquer work, based on the diverse world of lacquer.
