Twentieth-Century Art from the Okawa Museum of Art Collection - From Picasso and Ben Shahn to Pop Art

Utsunomiya Museum of Art
Finished
The 20th century was a tumultuous era marked by two world wars and economic growth, which greatly shook people's lives and values. In the field of art, artists continued to produce works that broke away from traditional norms.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Cubism was established, and after World War I, many artists gathered in Paris, giving rise to new movements such as the École de Paris and Surrealism. After World War II, the center of art shifted to the United States, which had achieved post-war reconstruction. American Scene artists who observed social trends, Japanese artists who studied in America, and Pop Art artists who focused on everyday objects created diverse works.

In this exhibition, selected masterpieces from the 20th-century art collection of the Okawa Museum of Art (located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture), including works by Maurice Utrillo, Pablo Picasso, Ben Shahn, and Andy Warhol, are showcased, introducing various aspects of 20th-century art.

Eiji Okawa, who referred to himself as a "salaryman collector," became captivated by art through collecting magazine cover illustrations. Over the next 40 years, he amassed a collection of artworks from around the world, forming the foundation of the Okawa Museum of Art. Enjoy the numerous masterpieces of 20th-century art in this personal collection.
