Traditional Swordsmithing of the Five Famed Regions

The Japanese Sword Museum
Finished
Until the Muromachi period, the key Japanese sword production centers were mainly Yamato (Nara), Yamashiro (Kyoto), Bizen (Okayama), Sagami (Kanagawa), and Mino (Gifu). Later, sword appraisal categorized these swords into five types based on region-specific characteristics like forging patterns and temper lines. These categories were formalized by the Hon'ami family in the Edo period but gained wider acceptance in the Meiji era through Koetsu Hon'ami's efforts. This classification system is now fundamental in sword appreciation. The exhibition showcases works from these regions and traditions, offering a glimpse into the diversity and depth of Japanese swordsmithing.
