The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011.
The Rias Ark Museum of Art, located in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, conducted earthquake damage records and research activities for approximately two years immediately after the earthquake occurred. Approximately 30,000 photographs were taken and approximately 250 disaster-affected items were collected- the daily life lost to the tsunami and the ever-changing landscape ever since that day. The photographs and damaged items taken and collected under the harsh conditions of the researchers themselves being disaster victims play a role in connecting memories before the disaster to the future, and are currently on display at the museum's permanent exhibition, "Records of the Great East Japan Earthquake." Published in "History of Tsunami Disasters."

In this exhibition, in cooperation with the Rias Ark Museum of Art, on display photos and damaged items for the first time in the area along the Sea of ​​Japan. 13 years have passed since that day.

This time, in conjunction with the exhibition, works were solicited based on the theme of memories and important things, mainly from people in Kurobe City, and many people agreed and submitted works. Kesennuma and Kurobe. Both are towns that have lived in harmony with the sea, making a living from fishing since ancient times.

*“Living with the sea” was chosen as the catchphrase for Kesennuma City’s earthquake recovery plan.
