In 1887 (Meiji 20), the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, the predecessor of the current Tokyo University of the Arts Faculty of Fine Arts, was established as a place to study traditional Japanese art and opened in 1889 (Meiji 22). Tenshin Okakura (1863-1913), who was concerned about the need to preserve and pass on Japan's unique art culture in the face of the rapid westernization that accompanied the opening of Japan to the West, played a central role in the establishment and operation of the school and worked hard to foster artists.

The museum, located in Itsuura, a place associated with Tenshin, has a collection of 2,850 paintings that are said to have been created by students of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts for their classes, entrance examinations, and promotion examinations.

This exhibition introduces works from the museum's collection of assigned paintings by subjects, such as Ringa, Drawing, and New Idea. The works of Yokoyama Taikan and other students who studied at the school showcase the study that the masters accomplished in their younger days.
