Toko's Lines

Gifu Collection of Modern Arts
Finished
Toko Shinoda had been pursuing abstract expression by deconstructing characters and seeking forms of lines beyond characters even before her trip to the United States from 1956 to 1958. Utilizing space and negative space, the ink lines backed by the brush techniques cultivated through calligraphy create visual expansiveness and depth, even on flat surfaces.

For Shinoda, writing lines with ink meant "concentrating while cutting, and the mind's work must be infused into the negative space." She also stated, "Ink is not suitable for painting. Since ink was created for writing, it must be the accumulation of the singular act of writing."

The lines drawn by Shinoda’s ink, with their variations in blurring and fading, and sharp lines that seem to cut through the surface, always interact with time and space. She faced the challenge of using long-bristled brushes, which she referred to as "brushes without sex" due to their difficulty to handle, and ink that lightly exceeded her intentions. Throughout her nearly 80-year creative career, she wrote various lines.

This exhibition focuses on expressing the "lines" written by Toko Shinoda.
