This exhibition by Malibu-based artist Thomas Houseago is his first at Blum and in Tokyo.

Envisioning the cosmos anew for this show, the acclaimed sculptor furthers his exploration of the origins of culture by deploying some of its oldest known motifs—the owl, the cyclical moon, the elder tree, and the flower’s temporal beauty, among others. Manifesting in both sculpture and painting, Houseago’s characters channel this universal folklore, invoking age-old imagery afresh to imbue it with contemporary meaning. A larger than fifty-foot celestial painting on canvas hangs on the gallery wall, contextualizing the entire exhibition. Perched in front of this site-specific, painted tapestry as it fades from day to night, the artist’s sculpted emblems—the owl, the egg, and the flower—play off each other and their painted backdrop to convey themes of rebirth and the cyclical tendencies that ground the human experience.

In addition to the immense canvas that covers much of the gallery’s wall space, this exhibition premiers several of the artist’s smaller paintings that were created within his domestic space. These intimately scaled works meditate on the more minute facets of being. As such, this exhibition unites concepts around the expanse of exteriority, up to the cosmic level, with the vulnerability of interiority—grappling with one’s position as part of the whole.
