Hiroko Ando
Tie-dye is a technique for dyeing patterns by sewing, tying, and binding cloth with thread, or by folding and tightening the cloth itself to prevent dyeing. Various tie-dyeing techniques exist throughout the world, and they have been nurtured in the culture and climate of each region, resulting in the development of rich regional characteristics. Japan, in particular, is a country where an astonishingly large number of tie-dyeing techniques have been developed, numbering around 100. These tie-dyeing techniques have not only been handed down in the regions where they were produced but have also been given a new appeal as a technique of expression by artists.

This exhibition introduces Hiroko Ando's own works as well as tie-dyed works from Japan and abroad that she has discovered. In addition to Bungo and Chikuzen shibori from Kyushu and Arimatsu and Narumi shibori from Aichi Prefecture, there are colorful turbans and veils from India and powerful African loin cloths from overseas. And then there are the free and vigorous works by Hiroko Ando, who utilizes a wide variety of techniques. Visitors will see the fascinating world of tie-dyeing, which transcends time and region, from the past to the present day.
