The World of Japanese Falconry

The Tokugawa Art Museum
Finished
In Japan, falconry was popular among emperors, aristocrats, and samurai warriors from ancient times to the Edo period. It is different from other types of hunting in that it is not about hunting falcons, but hunting with falcons. It also has a ceremonial aspect in that the falcon and the birds caught are offered to the gods, and the techniques of raising falcons and controlling the falconry grounds are also essential elements.

This exhibition will unravel the world of falconry, focusing on the people and places involved.
