Shiro Kuramata
Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991) garnered attention with his interior design for the San-ai Dream Center, a landmark commercial facility in Ginza. In 1965, he established Kuramata Design Office, becoming independent. Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing urban landscape during Japan's period of high economic growth, he collaborated with contemporary artists to present new spatial concepts.

Simultaneously, he released furniture pieces created independently, without the intention of commercialization. By developing materials that matched his vision, Kuramata's designs were liberated from standardized convenience and brought a sense of playfulness and essential questions into everyday life.

In the 1980s, he participated in the Italian design movement "Memphis," expanding his influence globally. The furniture Kuramata designed, aiming to express what could not be conveyed in words, remains captivatingly eloquent.

This exhibition, the first retrospective in Kyoto in 25 years, follows Kuramata’s own words and showcases materials like image sketches and dream diaries that were fundamental to his creative process, inviting visitors to listen to the messages conveyed by his designs.

Having toured Tokyo and Toyama, this exhibition concludes at the Kyoto venue.
